11 Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor? 13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” 14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.” 16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

Okay, this sounds right. However, it sounds in conflict with what the bible says elsewhere: Jesus says, “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector." (Matthew 18: 15-17) How would one, know if a brother or sister sins if there is not judgement? Again, Paul chastises the Corinthians here for not judging a brother who sins, "It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. 2 And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this?" (1 Cor 5: 1-3)
Isn't speaking against what another brother is doing in violation of the law a requirement within the Body to ensure that sin does not take hold in the community? Paul continues, "What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.” (1 Cor 5 12-13) It is clear to me that we are not to pass judgment on non-believers but it is clear in what Jesus and Paul are saying that we are to call out those in the Body who sin. I must be missing the point of what James is saying here as I doubt there is conflict within God's Holy Word.
Please help me brothers/sisters! John

I get the sense this passage is not addressing reproof of a brother or sister that is done out of love (as we see in 1 Corinthians or Matthew). Rather, this involves speaking against a person from a motive other than love; such as when a person is condemned because they do not fit our notion of how a brother/sister should be like. In other words, this involves more of condemning a person for who they are rather than reproving out of love for an evil deed. To judge a person in such a way, is to condemn the one whom Christ has redeemed and in a way condemn the work of Christ.
I believe the lesson in this part is to not assume or live like one’s life is independent of the will of God.
17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
This is not addressing those things you are not sure of, but those things you know. This one verse often acts as a check on my decisions in life.

John, Matthew 18: 15-17 is about conflict resolution between you and your brother who has sinned directly against you.
